Storing lyophilized peptides
Temperature, light and moisture: the basics of keeping research materials stable.
Lyophilized (freeze-dried) peptides are far more stable than peptides in solution, but they still need the right conditions to stay intact.
Temperature
For long-term storage, lyophilized peptides are generally kept frozen at around −20 °C. For short periods they are usually stable at refrigerator temperature.
Moisture and light
Moisture speeds up degradation. Let a cold vial reach room temperature before opening it to avoid condensation, and keep vials sealed and away from direct light.
After reconstitution
Once a peptide is dissolved for an experiment, it becomes much less stable. Researchers typically refrigerate solutions, avoid repeated freeze-thaw cycles and follow the protocol for their specific study.
