How to read a certificate of analysis

What HPLC purity, mass spec identity and batch numbers on a COA actually tell you.

A certificate of analysis (COA) is a lab report that documents what was found when a specific batch was tested. A good COA lets you check that the material in your vial is what the label says it is.

1. Batch or lot number

The batch number on the COA should match the number on your vial. A COA for a different batch tells you nothing about the material you actually have.

2. Purity by HPLC

High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) separates the target peptide from impurities. Purity is reported as a percentage of the total signal. Research suppliers commonly target 98% or higher.

3. Identity by mass spectrometry

Mass spectrometry (MS) measures the molecular weight of the compound. The observed mass should match the theoretical mass for that peptide sequence, confirming that it is the correct molecule.

4. Who did the testing

Independent, third-party labs provide a check that does not rely on the manufacturer. Look for the lab name, the test date and the methods used.
